This reviewer is not particularly fond of romantic-comedies and therefore was not expecting much upon entering the cinema. However, Hitch turns out to be quite good.

Will Smith (better associated with saving the world) plays a date doctor who helps nerds approach and start a relationship with the girl they fancy. Eva Mendes plays a gossip journalist who doesnít have time for a boyfriend- if you donít know what happens next then you are watching your first rom-com I presume. They work well together but never produce any real spark; a factor crucial to the success of any rom-com. Smith is at his funniest for most of the movie and is able to maintain a sense of cool when faced with the ridiculous and remains a hugely likeable actor. Mendes, whilst less gifted, does well not to allow her character to slip into fiery Latina stereotype too often, and appears happy to pratfall when required.

The best laughs though are generated from Albert (Kevin James), a loveable-loser who falls for out-of-his league Allegra (Amber Valletta). His tendency to do the wrong thing produces some of the best moments of the film, and it would have been nice to see this relationship given more screen time.

Hitch is a middle of the road romantic-comdey which is elevated above average thanks to the performances on display. Undemanding and uncomplicated this is a thoroughly enjoyable 2 hours; just donít expect too much from it.
